When Spring Never Comes | twilight of poem

When Spring Never Comes

They were my friends,
Sharing the gift of life;
We grew together
On the flowerbed of childhood,
So, when on the brook of youth I stood,
I could not fathom,
The parting of ways,
The sudden change of mind,
The breaking of ties that bind,
And why it all blew away with the wind…..

I was torn apart,
In soul and heart;
With emotions curt,
That deeply hurt;
With words stronger than arrows,
Mightier than swords.

I was burnt with the fire of fury,
Rekindled with hatred;
My grave was laid,
My feelings buried;
And a sapling of bitter revenge was nurtured.
I was welcomed with airs of indifference,
To me that made no sense.
And I trod a trail of thorns
Laid especially for me.
They were colder than winter,
I was sadder than autumn
And spring never came.

They were friends,
Who became fiends.
They stabbed and betrayed;
Causing not bloodshed, but tears.
Perhaps it was a bonsaied friendship,
A flower that died a bud,
And was lost to dust.

They were friends,
Who caused ends,
To every beginning I made,
Leading my destiny to fade,
My spirit to vanish
Into oblivion.

No man can live as an island,
But I’m fighting a lone battle called life,
With the world on one side
And me on the other,
Finding and losing my way,
And swept away by the tides of fate.

When friends turn into foes,
When lovers become strangers,
And loneliness a constant companion
All laughter and joy becomes yesterday,
And sorrow becomes every tomorrow.

Then it is me and my shadow that remains
As all else is feigned;
As is said so apt…..
That familiarity breeds contempt.
